Attendance and absences

School Attendance Procedures

If your child is absent from school, you can let the school know via:

  • The school email: eglinton-p.school @det.nsw.edu.au
  • School Stream
  • Sentral Parent Portal
  • Phone: 6337 1205

or alternatively, you can send a note to the classroom teacher. Please note: teachers must receive an explanation for a student’s absence within 7 days from the first day of any absence. The 7 day timeframe for explaining absences is a requirement of the Education Act of 1990.

At Eglinton Public School:

1. Each class teacher documents individual student attendance daily through Sentral Attendance and submits by 10am.

2. All students arriving to school after 9:20am and leaving school before 3:25pm must be signed in and out of the school through the front office.

3. Upon return from an absence, if no explanation for the absence has been received after 2 days the class teacher will:

a) Send home with the student the proforma for Unexplained Absence to the student’s parents / carers.

b) If no explanation has been received within a further 2 days, classroom teacher to ring and log the phone call on Sentral. *

c) If contact with parents/carers cannot be made, teacher to notify the Stage Assistant Principal to discuss next steps.

Family holidays in school term

Families are encouraged to travel during school holidays. If travel during school term is necessary, please discuss this with the school principal. An Application for Extended Leave may need to be completed. Absences relating to travel will be marked as left on the roll and therefore contribute to your child's total absences for the year. Holidays taken by students outside of school vacation periods will now be included as absences. A certificate of exemption can no longer be granted for this purpose.

Missing school means your child misses out on vital information and maintaining learning routines. This can result in a loss of confidence and missing out on forming vital friendships.

Attendance is recorded each day. As a parent or caregiver, you are responsible for ensuring your child attends school every day, including sports days unless your child:

  • has an unavoidable medical or dental appointment (preferably these should be made after school or during holidays
  • is required to attend a recognised religious holiday
  • is required to attend an exceptional or urgent family circumstance (such as attending a funeral)
  • is sick, or has an infectious illness.

If you are having difficulty getting your child to attend school regularly, you might like to talk to the school principal or the school counselor.

If your child has to be absent from school for any reason, including arriving late or leaving early, please either tell your child's teacher or the administrative assistant at our school, or explain the reason by phone, email, or write a note as soon as possible and within seven days.
